Possible topics

We are your hosts: Ahkiba, Ellyn, and Pamalar.

Why we started this podcast?

We are reading a book called “Becoming Heroines” that we will talk about in the show's final segment.  It was a catalyst for figuring out how to use our unique voices, personalities, interests, passions, and experiences to inform, entertain, engage, and hopefully inspire others to get involved in their communities, politics, self-care, and emotional well-being and engaged spirituality.

Each week we will bring you culture, Blackness from a woke- working-class perspective, a political candidate that we support and how you can get involved, a book to read that will help you grow, learn, or understand something in a new way. What’s Good, something good is always going on in the world, and we want to share it with you.

  • Black History Month - All month

a fact about someone that matters to us

bring up a black woman in history

    • Fannie Lou Hamer - there was a new book about her released last year that I read.  I learned about her legacy in a way that I never learned growing up.  There is a great speech that she gave.

  • Why did Whoopie get suspended at the beginning of black history month?

She made an inartful comment about the Holocaust not being about race. Instead, she said that it was about Man’s inhumanity to man.

Here’s an article that I read right before Whoopie stepped into it and got into trouble. https://forward.com/life/455275/for-this-korean-american-rabbi-jewish-peoplehood-is-powerful-and-real-and/

I think she may be coming from a perspective that black folk have, who have learned that they too have Jewish heritage.  Jews are NOT a race. Throughout history, Jews have been of many different races.  So race as a construct is one thing, but Judaism is a religion. And there is a good argument for Jews to not see themselves as a race. But why Whoopie was wrong is that Hitler absolutely saw Jews as an inferior race that had to be exterminated. It also didn’t help that four people were held hostage in a synagogue in Texas just a few short weeks ago. This terrorizes any Jewish person in the country.

My problem with her being suspended is threefold.  One, her statement was out of ignorance, not malice. This misses an opportunity to engage with Rabbis, scholars, and Historians on the Holocaust because our country really needs a refresher. If we have people who are willing to learn and grow, we should provide the opportunity for them to do so.

Making future black history: We will have a black woman on the SCOUTS!!!

Black folk in Detroit just lost our voting block power due to redistricting upheld by the Michigan Supreme Court.

Inventions made or discovered by blacks that most don’t know of.

  • Our book of the week

Becoming Heroines - encourage everyone to support small businesses and buy this book from their local independently own book store. We purchased all of our copies from Source Booksellers, a Detroit indy book store owned by a black woman, and she actually expanded her store during the pandemic. She was able to do that only through community support.

What’s Good?

Our Candidate of the week -

  • Malcolm Kenyatta

His endorsements page

He is for the expansion of voting rights and protections. 48 states have proposed new voting restrictions, and he has made it clear that if elected Senator of Pennsylvania, he supports ending Jim Crow the era filibuster. This is key to expanding voting rights and protecting those we have.

Something I don’t hear talked about but that he addresses is pre-canvasing ballots, meaning you turn our ballot in early, but there is an error; he wants to contact the voter to allow them the opportunity to correct their ballots.  This is extremely important. No one should have their vote thrown out for an easily fixed mistake.

His opposition to the “election integrity” committee, which would have allowed House Republicans to disrupt the election, won widespread media attention, forcing Republicans to drop the proposal. Malcolm knows how to win these fights.

He supports Statehood for DC and Puerto Rico. This is excellent for a whole host of reasons, not in the least an actual voice, ending tariffs on Puerto Rico, which is unconstitutional as hell, i.e., taxation without representation!

Transforming Criminal justice to prioritize the well-being of all,  safety, and mental health. Restorative justice is Malcolm's focus, and I am here for it. Stop trying black children as adults.  Get help for addiction, not prison, and train more mental health professionals.

- Good ways to help out Malcolm Kenyatta are things like Text Banking, and those start every Thursday from 6-7 pm starting Feb 10th and ending May 5th. I'm sure we can all manage to fit Texting into our hectic schedules.

He's also Offering virtual training for voter registration training.

Inspiration for the week

What’s Inspired me This week is the fact that I woke up😐

Ellyn’s Inspiration for the week was Black Leaders Detroit, an organization led by a black man named Dwan Dandridge, who may or may not be related to me. The organization has received and distributed $400,000 to black-owned Detroit businesses to date.  They are doing the most to decrease the wealth gap in black households in the Detroit community. Their focus is Cooperative economics, Neighborhood stabilization, and self-advocacy.
